Doctors Look at Other Tools to Measure Obesity
Body Mass Index (BMI) calculates body fat based on height and weight ratios. While commonly used to assess health risks and determine eligibility for weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Zepbound (prescribed for BMI >30, or >27 with related health conditions), BMI has significant limitations.
Recent research has challenged traditional assumptions and notions that a higher BMI correlates directly with health risks. The metric fails to consider crucial factors like muscle mass, bone density, and racial differences in body composition. Additionally, the location of body fat matters more than overall weight – visceral fat around organs can pose health risks even in people with normal BMI.
These findings suggest that healthcare providers should look beyond BMI alone when evaluating metabolic health and treatment options.
