NUTRITIONIST EXPLAINS THE BEST TIME OF THE DAY TO EAT CARBS

Professor Sarah Berry explained that to avoid a high blood sugar response, you should be eating carbohydrates at a certain time

Renowned British nutrition expert Professor Sarah Berry recently shared insights about optimal carbohydrate consumption timing on Davina McCall’s “Begin Again” podcast. Drawing from over two decades of nutritional research experience at King’s College London and as Zoe’s chief scientist, Professor Berry offered evidence-based guidance on carbohydrate timing.

According to Professor Berry, consuming carbohydrates earlier in the day produces more favorable blood glucose responses compared to evening consumption. “Research confirms that morning carbohydrate intake generates lower blood sugar responses than afternoon consumption,” she explained to McCall.

The nutritionist emphasized that healthy eating encompasses not just food choices but also consumption patterns. “We’ve conducted fascinating research examining time-of-day effects in pre-versus-postmenopausal women,” Professor Berry noted.

This timing effect appears particularly significant for women experiencing perimenopause or post menopause, with Professor Berry observing that the impact becomes more “pronounced” during these life stages. Her practical advice: “If you’re craving tea and cake, choose 11 AM rather than 4 PM.”

Carbohydrates serve as the body’s primary energy source, breaking down into glucose that fuels cellular function and can be stored as glycogen in muscles and liver. Complex carbohydrates release glucose more gradually than refined carbs or sugary items, promoting sustained fullness. Whole grain options like brown rice, wholegrain bread, and skin-on potatoes also provide important dietary fiber, helping meet nutritional requirements.
