Elderberries are small, dark purple berries that grow in clusters on the elder tree (Sambucus), with the European black elder (Sambucus nigra) and American elder (Sambucus canadensis) being the most common varieties. These berries have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and cooking. They are particularly known for their nutritional value, Traditional uses and Medicinal properties. They’re rich in vitamin c, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin a. Also they are Commonly made into wines, jams, jellies, and often used in folk medicine to treat colds, flu, and boost immune system function.
Recent research by Washington State University suggests elderberry juice could play a significant role in supporting healthy weight and metabolism.
The research, published in the journal Nutrients, revealed that consuming 12 ounces of elderberry juice each day for one week led to beneficial changes in participants’ gut microbiota, while also enhancing their glucose tolerance and ability to burn fat.
Lead researcher Patrick Solverson, an assistant professor in WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine’s Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, noted, “Elderberry has been overlooked both commercially and nutritionally. The emerging evidence of its health benefits is promising.”
The investigation took the form of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 18 participants who were overweight. The study subjects consumed either elderberry juice or a carefully crafted placebo developed by North Carolina State University’s Food Innovation Lab that matched the appearance and flavor of elderberry juice. Throughout the study, participants followed a standardized dietary plan.
