BMI (Body Mass Index) measures weight relative to height, with obesity defined as a BMI over 30, overweight as 25-29.9, and severe obesity as 40+ according to WHO standards. While commonly used, BMI has historical limitations – it was created in 1832 by Adolphe Quetelet to study population averages among European white men, not individual health.
The concept of “normal” weight gained prominence in 1950s America through insurance company metrics, as Metropolitan Life Insurance observed correlations between weight and claims. However, in 2023, the American Medical Association recommended against using BMI as the sole health indicator. More precise body fat measurements, like skinfold calipers, are available.
The formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
