A recent study by Oxford Population Health reveals a critical link between metabolic syndrome and dementia risk. Researchers discovered that individuals who develop metabolic syndrome in late midlife (ages 60-69) face a higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to those who develop the condition later in life.
Metabolic syndrome, affecting approximately one-quarter of the global population, is characterized by three or more health indicators: an enlarged waist circumference, elevated triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, increased blood sugar, and reduced levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol.
While previous research has established a connection between metabolic syndrome and increased dementia risk, this study specifically investigated how the timing and duration of the syndrome might influence cognitive decline. The findings, published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, highlight the potential importance of early metabolic health management in preventing neurological complications.
