In the weight loss journey, many people combine exercise with strict dieting. However, hunger remains a common challenge that some actively fear. Nutritionist Pooja Makhija recently addressed this issue in an Instagram video.
She asks viewers, “Ever experienced a natural pang of hunger, followed by an instant wave of anxiety because you fear hunger?” Makhija points out the concerning trend of weight loss-suppressing medications becoming “as common as candy,” with many turning to them as quick solutions. This has led to people developing a fear of feeling hungry.
She emphasizes that hunger shouldn’t be feared: “Hunger is not an emotion to fear because, in fact, it is a natural way of your body signaling that it is done with digesting the previous meal and is now ready for the next batch of nurture and nutrition you can provide the body.”
Pooja Makhija continues by referencing a 2016 study from the Journal of Cell Metabolism which found that natural hunger signals actually indicate an enhanced metabolic rate and improved insulin sensitivity.
“So my dear friends, please stop fearing hunger,” she advises. “Of course, if hunger is coming as frequently as every hour, then it could definitely mean that you are bored or you are confusing thirst. But about every 2-3 hours, hunger is a very natural emotion that you must not be afraid of.”
Pooja Makhija explains that hunger serves as the body’s natural signal that it requires food and nourishment for healing. She stresses that food should be viewed as medicine, and hunger is a natural emotional cue to embrace rather than fear.
